Fifty-eight riders entered the 30th Quaker Run organised by South Durham Section in May. They included some friends from far afield, with Freddie Glenndehl from Sweden being the furthest travelled by ferry, whilst we were also honoured by the presence of our President Peter Vines.

On Saturday many of us enjoyed the Treasurer’s Tour of Teesdale, which visited Alston for lunch, and a look at the Tynedale railway and transport museum, before taking various routes to the mid afternoon tea break in Ireshopeburn.

Two veterans led the field away from Middleton St George Cricket Club with David Jolley’s 1913 Triumph hotly pursued by a slightly younger model in the loving care of our Treasurer Brian Smith. Half of the entry was made up of machines built after 1945, the last 3 names of the entry having travelled from Leeds on a sunny morning to join us.

Although there were seven non-starters, the remainder made the outward journey into Wensleydale before turning north over Askrigg Bank for lunch on the village green in Reeth. The afternoon route took competitors around a loop in Swaledale, into Arkengarthdale and over the Stang. This year we finished at the Fighting Cocks Pub as we were unsure whether the Cricket Club would be available when the entry forms were made available at the end of March.

Freda Marwood one of our long serving marshals presented the concours awards and gifts at the finish, however the official ceremony takes place at the Section’s Presentation dinner dance on 21st January 2006.
